Air travel is an essential part of how we support our teams, franchisees, and clients across New Zealand and beyond. But it also comes with a cost to the environment — one we believe should be acknowledged and actively managed.
At Jani-King New Zealand, we’ve long been committed to reducing and mitigating our environmental impact. While we’ve been offsetting air travel emissions for some time, since July 2024 we’ve taken a more structured approach by formally tracking both our travel and the associated carbon offsets.
Since then, our team has travelled approximately 297,530 kilometres across domestic and international flights, generating an estimated 90,644 kilograms of carbon emissions.
To address this, we’ve now formalised our approach. Carbon offsetting is no longer a choice, it is part of our internal procedures. Every flight booked must include a carbon offset contribution.
In practice, this means we voluntarily add the offset cost at the time of booking. Most of our travel is with Air New Zealand, whose carbon offset programme is transparent and easy to engage with. Jetstar also provides a carbon offset option, which we utilise every time.
Since July 2024, we have contributed approximately $3,000 towards carbon offsetting through these programmes.
Is carbon offsetting a complete solution? No — and it shouldn’t be treated as one. Reducing emissions where possible remains the priority. But where travel is necessary, offsetting is a practical way to take responsibility for the impact today, not sometime in the future.
Formalising this into our company policies ensures consistency, accountability, and visibility. It turns a good intention into a standard business practice.
This is one of many steps we are taking as part of our broader sustainability journey, focused not only on what we do within buildings, but how we operate as a business overall.
