High-Country Adventure and a Life-Saving Cause: Jani-King's Chosen Charity for 2024

That’s why we’re proud to announce the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust (Westpac Rescue Helicopter) as one of our chosen charities for 2024. Through this partnership, we’ll be donating to support their incredible work in saving lives across Canterbury and the West Coast.
This cause is especially close to our hearts, and it’s all thanks to an unforgettable experience involving Jani-King’s CEO Nick James, and the amazing Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew.
Nick’s Cattle-Mustering Adventure
Towards the end of last year, Nick and his son Noah took part in a cattle mustering, with Andy Mason a well-known farmer located in the picturesque high-country of North Canterbury.
The adventure began early, with the team hiking rugged, gorse-laden terrain to herd cattle. But as the day unfolded, disaster struck. On a steep incline, Nick lost his footing, slipped on a rock, and landed heavily — resulting in a dislocated shoulder, that was also broken in three places.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter to the Rescue
With no mobile reception and Nick in severe pain, Andy acted quickly and eventually found cell phone coverage and contacted the professionals—the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. After a short wait, the helicopter arrived, and the skilled crew, including critical care paramedic Kath, began their heroic efforts to ease Nick’s pain and stabilise his injury.
Despite their best efforts to reset his shoulder in the field, Nick required hospital treatment. The helicopter transported him to Christchurch Hospital, where Nick’s wife Shelly was waiting, thanks to a lucky tip-off from Andy’s wife Angie.

A year on, Nick is recovering well, but the experience left a lasting impression. The professionalism and dedication of the Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter team were nothing short of lifesaving. That’s why Jani-King is proud to support this vital service in 2024.
